Frequency band 200Khz understanding?

Im a little confused with the statements like that, im studying computer communication. In the book it says frequency band of 200Khz. But what exactly does that mean? it also says the band is split up with upload/download etc, but how can it be like that, the say coax cable is one solid cable where data can travel one behind another.
